How to Get Assessed for ADHD or Autism in South Africa

In short: In South Africa, adults are assessed by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, and children by a paediatrician, child psychiatrist or educational/clinical psychologist. Expect to pay privately for most assessments.

Step by step

  1. Screen yourself: the ASRS ADHD self-screen and autism screeners.
  2. Write things down: examples from childhood, school reports, work, relationships. Ask a family member what you were like as a child.
  3. Find a professional who assesses adults (or children) and, ideally, both autism and ADHD β€” see the directory.
  4. The assessment: usually interviews, questionnaires (for you and someone who knows you), and sometimes cognitive testing, over one or more sessions.
  5. Feedback and report: you receive a written report with diagnosis and recommendations.
  6. Treatment: a psychiatrist can discuss medication; psychologists and OTs offer therapy and strategies.

How much does an ADHD or autism assessment cost?

Costs vary widely by practitioner and city. Psychologist sessions in Johannesburg typically cost R1,100–R1,500 per hour, and a full assessment often takes several sessions plus a report. Ask for a written quote. Medical aid rarely covers full diagnostic or psycho-educational assessments.

Public healthcare options

Public hospitals with psychiatry departments and some university clinics offer assessments at lower cost, but waiting lists can be long. Ask your local clinic for a referral.

Adult autism assessments

Fewer clinicians specialise in adult autism, especially in people who mask. Ask directly about their experience with adults and with women.
