In short: ADHD and autism can count as disabilities in South Africa when they are long-term and substantially limit your ability to work or function. This can entitle you to reasonable accommodation at work and may support a tax credit.

Whether ADHD counts as a disability in South Africa depends on its impact on you, not the diagnosis alone. This article is general information, not legal advice.
The Employment Equity Act
The Employment Equity Act and its Code of Good Practice on the employment of persons with disabilities define disability as a long-term or recurring physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a person’s prospects of entry into, or advancement in, employment. Employers must not unfairly discriminate and should provide reasonable accommodation.
Reasonable accommodation at work
- Quiet workspace or noise-cancelling headphones
- Written instructions and agendas
- Flexible hours or remote work
- Regular check-ins and clear priorities
- Breaks for movement or sensory rest
Should I disclose?
Disclosure is your choice. It is usually needed to request accommodations formally. Consider what you need and who to tell first.
Tax
A medical practitioner can complete SARS form ITR-DD if a condition substantially limits daily functioning, which may increase your medical tax credit. See the medical aid and tax guide.
Disability grant
SASSA disability grants require a medical assessment showing you cannot work; few people with ADHD alone qualify.
