In short: South Africa has public autism-specific schools, special-needs schools, private centres and mainstream schools with support classes. Public places are scarce β in Johannesburg fewer than 10 public schools offer structured autism support, and private centres can cost up to R15,000 a month.

Finding the right autism school is one of the hardest steps for South African parents. Here is how the system works.
Types of schools
| Type | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Public autism-specific schools (LSEN) | Specialised classes, low fees, long waiting lists |
| Autism units in mainstream schools | Support class with inclusion in mainstream |
| Private autism centres | Small classes, therapies on site; high fees |
| Remedial schools | For learning difficulties; may suit some autistic or ADHD children |
| Mainstream with accommodations | Facilitator/class assistant, concessions |
