Body Doubling: Why It Works for ADHD (and How to Try It Free)

In short: Body doubling is doing a task while someone else is present β€” in person or online. Many ADHD people find it makes starting and staying on task far easier.

Body doubling is a simple productivity strategy: another person works (or simply sits) alongside you while you do a task. You do not need them to help β€” their presence is the point.

Why body doubling works

  • Gentle accountability helps with task initiation
  • Another person anchors your attention
  • It reduces the isolation that feeds avoidance

Research on body doubling itself is still limited; most evidence is from lived experience and from related findings on social facilitation and accountability.

Free ways to try body doubling

  1. A friend on a video call β€” cameras on, mics off, 50 minutes.
  2. Focusmate β€” free tier offers a limited number of 50-minute sessions a week with a stranger.
  3. β€œStudy with me” streams on YouTube.
  4. Co-working spaces or libraries.
  5. Household body doubling β€” fold laundry while someone cooks.
