An educational psychologist is a psychologist registered with the HPCSA who specialises in learning and development. They are often the first professional South African parents see when school is a struggle.
What does an educational psychologist do?
- Psycho-educational assessments (cognitive ability, scholastic skills, attention, emotional functioning)
- Recommendations for school accommodations, concessions and school placement
- Therapy and parent guidance
- Referral to a paediatrician or psychiatrist where ADHD or autism is suspected
What happens in an assessment
- Parent intake interview and questionnaires
- Teacher questionnaires
- Testing sessions with your child (often 2β4 sessions)
- Written report and feedback meeting
How much does it cost?
Fees vary widely by practitioner and region. Ask for a written quote that includes the report. Medical aid rarely covers full psycho-educational assessments, although some sessions may be paid from savings.
Can an educational psychologist diagnose ADHD or autism?
They can identify difficulties and, depending on their training, may contribute to a diagnosis; medication requires a doctor. Many families also see a paediatrician or child psychiatrist.
