In short: A late diagnosis often brings relief, grief and a rethink of your whole life story. These ten steps help you make sense of it without rushing.

Being late diagnosed with autism, ADHD or both can feel like being handed the manual to your own brain decades late. Here is what helps.
1. Expect mixed emotions
Relief (“it wasn’t a character flaw”) and grief (“what if I had known?”) often arrive together. Both are normal.
2. Re-read your history kindly
Many struggles at school, work or in relationships make new sense. Write them down — it helps your self-understanding and future appointments.
3. Learn from other autistic and ADHD adults
Lived-experience communities are often the best teachers. See where to meet other autistic and AuDHD adults.
4. Notice your sensory needs
Lights, noise, clothing, food textures — small changes can reduce daily load.
5. Reduce masking where it is safe
Unmasking gradually, with safe people first, can ease exhaustion.
6. Decide who to tell
You do not owe anyone disclosure. Start with people who are likely to respond well.
7. Consider workplace accommodations
Quiet space, written instructions and flexible hours are common reasonable accommodations. See does ADHD count as a disability in SA?
8. Explore treatment options
For ADHD, discuss medication and therapy with a psychiatrist. See ADHD medication in SA.
9. Watch for burnout
Many late-diagnosed adults are diagnosed during burnout. Read AuDHD burnout and recovery.
10. Give it time
Identity shifts take months or years. Be patient with yourself.
