In short: Up to about half of adults with ADHD also have an anxiety disorder. The two can look alike, feed each other and need to be assessed together.

ADHD and anxiety frequently co-occur. Living with untreated ADHD β missed deadlines, forgotten commitments β can create constant worry, and anxiety can worsen concentration.
How to tell them apart
| ADHD | Anxiety | |
|---|---|---|
| Concentration problems | Lifelong, across settings | Worse when worried |
| Restlessness | Need for stimulation | Nervous tension |
| Started | Childhood | Any age |
Why they overlap
- Shared genetic and brain-based factors
- Chronic stress from coping with ADHD
- Autistic people also have high rates of anxiety β AuDHD adds both
Treatment considerations
Treating both matters. Some people find anxiety improves once ADHD is treated; others find stimulants increase anxiety and need a different approach, such as a non-stimulant like atomoxetine or therapy (CBT). Only your doctor can advise you.
ADHD and depression
Depression is also more common in ADHD. If you feel hopeless, contact SADAG on 0800 567 567.
